What is Ghosting

You are here: Home / Relationships / What is Ghosting

November 26, 2019 by Adam Smith

Have you ever been in a relationship and out of the blue all communication stops? You are not sure why, but phone calls, text messages, emails, just stop like they never existed? Besides a family emergency or god forbid something worse, dropped dead. It could be that he or she has simply ghosted you and has stopped all communication.

What is Ghosting? Ghosting is simply the term used when someone is dating the other person disappears and stops all communication. Texting, phone calls, social media, and emails. It was like your relationship never existed between you and them.

Dating and ghosting

Find yourself suddenly unable to communicate with a person you were in an intimate relationship with and considered to be dating? You could have gotten ghosted by that person. Gone are the days when you actually had to count them if you wanted to be with them.

Now with so many apps like Tender and plenty of fish to connect with someone whether that be a one-time hookup or more the ability to connect and then not happens almost instantly. It does not matter if you have dated a person a few times or just connected online when the other person goes silent with no explanation it can hurt.

Ghosting on social media

Ghosting on social media

Social media ghosting is quite common and easy. A few pushes or clicks of the mouse you can hide, remove or delete a contact. Ghosting on social media. The frustrating part of ghosting is feeling frustration about why someone would do this. What did I do that would cause someone to just stop talking to me?

Why do people ghost?

The answer to this question depends on who you ask. with that said there could be many reasons why someone would ghost a person from:

Using apps for the sole purpose of hooking up on a one night stand and never speaking to him or her again. We spoke to someone recently about this exact case. She was generally looking for a match and thought she found it. A week later off of one of their best dates he disappeared. No return phone calls, or emails. He also unfollowed this person on all social media profiles. She had been ghosted.

Why had this happened? A few reasons could be:

  • He just was not interested any longer
  • He got what he wanted and that was that in his mind
  • He does this kind of stuff all the time, these kind of apps are a game to him.
  • He did not have the nerve to break it off so he felt better just ignoring her until she stopped contacting him.

Regardless of why ghosting happens, it hurts the other person in most instances. The above are just some reasons why people may ghost others.

What can you do about getting ghosted?

Have you been on the receiving end of getting ghosted by someone? If so, you know it well, sucks, to say the least. There are a few things you should do if you on the receiving end of this.

Try and get closure if possible.

It is possible for reasons outside his or her control for the radio silence. Try and give that person the benefit of the doubt without jumping to major conclusions at first. Try texting him or her a quick “Hey is everything good?”

Live in reality and be honest with yourself

No one wants to get ghosted but you need to come to terms with the reality that you could have been on the receiving end of this. If so ask yourself is this the kind of person I want to be with anyway? Someone that could leave out of the blue? At the end of the day, communication is one of the building blocks to a healthy long relationship.

Lean on friends for support

Lean on your friends for support during this time. That’s what they are there for. Tell them what happened, get it out and start feeling better. Besides, do you really want to be with someone like this? No.

You deserve better than this

You deserve to be treated better than this and should want to be with someone that enjoys being with you as much as you do them. Tell yourself you deserve better and will find someone better. If you have to feel down for a little, but pick yourself back up and know you deserve much better.
