Supreme Court

The supreme court is the states last resort court. Meaning when it makes a decision its binding on all state courts in Colorado. This particular court has seven justices who can serve ten-year terms. The actual Chief of justice serves as the executive head of the Judicial System in Colorado. This is chief also appoints the chief judge for all of the states 22 judicial districts and for the court of appeals.


Court of Appeals

The court of appeals is the intermediate appellae court. The only higher court is the Supreme Court for appeals. This court consist of 22 judges as of July 1, 2008. This judges can serve eight-year terms. When a case needs to be decided on there are three-member divisions. The reasons the court of appeals exist is to give the Colorado people a timely resolution to appealed orders.


Trial Courts

The trial court system in Colorado hear civil cases in any amount as well as mental health cases, criminal, domestic relations, juvenile, and probate cases. A court decision at the district level can be appealed to the Colorado Court of Appeals and in some instances directly to the Supreme Court of Colorado.

County courts in Colorado will also handle civil cases, however, they only handle these cases that are under $15,000 misdemeanors, felony complaints, traffic infractions, small claims, and protection orders. Court cases may be appealed up to the district court.

Water Courts

In Colorado, they have something called the Water Right Determination and Administration Act of 1969 (the “1969 Act”) This act created seven water divisions that were based on drainage patterns for different rivers in Colorado. At different rivers within Colorado, there is a staffed division engineer that is appointed by the state engineer, a water clerk, water judge that is assigned by the district court.
